In Collaboration with Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, CMSC Driving School, and Worcester Educational Development Foundation

WORCESTER – Wednesday, June 18, 2025 – The Worcester Public Schools (WPS) will expand cost-discounted driver’s education for high school students in the 2025-26 school year thanks to an exciting new partnership with the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, CMSC Driving School, and the Worcester Educational Development Foundation.

The discounted driver’s ed program is designed to help Worcester high school students obtain driver’s licenses. The program will be offered at Worcester Technical High School this summer and expand to other WPS high schools during the 2025-26 school year. Central Mass. Safety Council (CMSC) Driving School will publicize registration links when class schedules are finalized. Anyone with questions may contact the CMSC Customer Service Team at 508-835-2333.

This initiative aims to make it easier and more affordable for students in Worcester to gain this important credential, which is the second most commonly required qualification on job postings nationwide. A valid driver’s license can open doors to a wide range of career opportunities, even in positions where driving is not a primary responsibility.

“A big thank you to our business and philanthropic partners for helping our students reach this important milestone,” said Incoming WPS Superintendent Brian Allen. “Expanding driver’s education is a basic way to remove road blocks that allow students access to jobs and the beginning of building sustainable careers and futures.”

“This partnership allows us to break down financial and logistical barriers for our students,” said Emily Lehman Miller, Director of Innovation Career Pathways at WPS. “By providing access to affordable driving education, we are helping our students not only prepare for the workforce but also build essential life skills.”

Currently, students in Gateway Cities like Worcester face unique barriers when it comes to obtaining their driver’s license. Many families in these communities struggle with the costs associated with driver’s education or might not have access to a family car for practice.

In addition to the discounted tuition, the Chamber and the Worcester Educational Development Foundation are launching a scholarship fund for students who cannot afford the reduced rate. The Keys to Career Readiness – WPS Driver’s Education Scholarship Fund will allow donors—whether individuals or companies—to contribute to the success of students who would otherwise be unable to participate in the program.

"Drivers licenses are crucial in today’s job market," said Karen Pelletier, Executive Vice President at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. "For many local students, the absence of a driver's license can limit their job opportunities, regardless of the career path they choose. This program will help level the playing field, providing a vital tool for future success."

“We are thrilled to be part of this initiative,” said Michael Curtis, District Manager at CMSC. “CMSC Driving School is committed to providing the highest quality driving instruction, and we are proud to be partnering with such an important community-driven project. The ability to help students earn their driver’s license is a small but meaningful way to invest in the future of Worcester.”
