WORCESTER – Thursday, May 15, 2025 – Worcester Public Schools (WPS) honored 213 multilingual and biliterate students on Wednesday, May 14, at Doherty Memorial High School during the district’s annual State Seal of Biliteracy ceremony.
The State Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state-approved districts that recognizes high school seniors who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and at least one language. A seal is placed on their diplomas to support them with future college and career opportunities.
The ceremony also recognized 64 students who qualified for the Biliteracy Pathway, which honors students who have reached an intermediate-to-mid level of proficiency in a language other than English.
“Multilingualism is a gift and an asset that we uplift and celebrate in the Worcester Public Schools,” said Superintendent Rachel H. Monárrez, PhD. “Embracing multiple languages and cultures opens up a world of possibilities and promotes greater understanding of one another. Congratulations to our scholars for the tremendous achievement of earning the Seal of Biliteracy.”
“Congratulations to the seniors who received the Seal of Biliteracy. We will always encourage our scholars to embrace multilingualism and multiculturalism in the Worcester Public Schools,” said Brian Allen, who will become the Superintendent on July 1 and is currently Deputy Superintendent. “We are proud of your hard work and are thrilled that you have this competitive advantage for college and career opportunities.”
The number of students receiving the Seal of Biliteracy has grown from 74 in 2022 to 213 in 2025. View a list of scholars and languages listed by school.
