WORCESTER – Friday, November 7, 2025 – Worcester Public Schools (WPS) has been invited by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to participate in the schematic design phase of the Accelerated Repair Program for potential building improvement projects at Belmont Street Community School and Rice Square School.

Through this invitation, WPS will work with the MSBA to explore potential roof, window, and door replacement projects designed to improve energy efficiency, building durability, and overall learning environments for students and staff.

“These design studies are an important step in ensuring our school buildings remain safe, energy-efficient, and well-maintained,” said Superintendent Brian E. Allen. “By planning these projects with the MSBA, WPS is taking a proactive approach to preserving our facilities so students and staff can focus on learning in safe, functional spaces.”

At Belmont Street Community School, the study will assess options for a roof replacement project covering approximately 44,700 square feet.

At Rice Square School, WPS will explore a roof, window, and door replacement project involving approximately 13,140 square feet of roof, 178 windows, and eight exterior building doors, which include four double doors and four single doors.

If accepted, the cost of both projects would be offset by funding provided through the MSBA. A cost estimate for the projects will be determined through the MSBA study.

The MSBA’s Accelerated Repair Program focuses on energy-efficient and cost-saving upgrades that extend the life of existing school buildings. The invitation marks the start of a collaborative process between WPS and the MSBA to develop schematic designs and determine the most sustainable and financially responsible approach to addressing the schools’ identified needs.

Final project approval and funding are contingent upon MSBA review and authorization of a Project Funding Agreement, expected within the next 14 to 16 months.
